Whether you’re shooting weddings, family portraits, or lifestyle sessions, having the right photography gear can make all the difference. As someone who has shot countless sessions, I’m sharing my absolute must-haves that keep me organized, efficient, and comfortable. And yes, some of these might seem unconventional (hello, toe separators!), but trust me—they’re lifesavers!
Top Gear for Photographers:
Photography Gear: Pre-Shoot Essentials:
- Memory Cards: You never know how many shots you’ll need to capture. I always carry extra high-quality memory cards to avoid any hiccups during a session. I highly recommend the Sandisk Extreme Pro for its reliability and fast read/write speeds, and they have different storage sizes (I love the 128 for family, couples and other sessions and 256 for weddings!) These cards are durable and can handle various conditions like extreme heat or cold. They also reduce buffer time between shots, which is a lifesaver during fast-paced events like weddings. Plus, the built-in data recovery software adds peace of mind in case of accidental deletions.
- Memory Card Holder: Staying organized is key, especially when shooting for long hours. A memory card holder keeps everything in one place and ensures you don’t lose those valuable shots.
- Lens Cleaning: Dust, fingerprints, and smudges can ruin a perfect shot. Simple lens cleaning with a blower, brush, and cloth is essential.
- Hand Wipes: These hand wipes are a must-have for photographers, especially during outdoor shoots or weddings! They’re perfect for quickly cleaning up after kids playing on the ground during family sessions or before handling delicate items like wedding dresses, veils, or any details that need to stay pristine.
- Collapsible Wagon: This wagon is an absolute game changer for your photography gear! Sometimes for our photoshoots have stuff – lots if it! Whether you’re bringing extra gear, props, blankets, or other items for themed mini sessions, it’s a lifesaver. No more struggling with multiple bags—just load everything in the wagon and roll with ease! Perfect for those times when you need to bring a lot without the hassle and you can fold it up and keep it right in your car!
Photography Gear During the Shoot:
- Camera Harness (Single & Dual): Say goodbye to neck pain! A camera harness takes the pressure off your neck and puts it on your back, which not only improves comfort but also helps with stability and posture.
- Fanny Pack: A fanny pack is a lifesaver for wedding photographers or during shoots where you need quick access to essentials but don’t want to carry a bulky camera bag. It keeps your hands free and offers easy access to memory cards, batteries, and lens caps, while staying sleek and unobtrusive. Perfect for when you’re on the move and want to keep your gear light!
- Simple Watch: Helps you keep track of the time during shoots, plus adds a little sophistication.
- Portable Large Ring Light: A portable large ring light is another game-changer for on-the-go shoots! It’s lightweight, super easy to carry, and gives you that soft, even lighting that’s perfect for portraits. What’s great is that you can adjust both the brightness and the color temperature, so no matter what setting you’re in, you can get the most flattering, shadow-free lighting every time. Plus, being USB-powered means you can plug it in pretty much anywhere – so convenient!
- Portable Ring Light
- Power Bank Chargers – these will charge the Ring Light!
- Waterproof Camera Cover: A waterproof camera cover is a must-have for rainy days or shoots near water. It keeps your camera safe and dry while letting you control it without hassle. Lightweight and easy to use, it’s perfect for protecting your gear from unexpected weather or splashes. A lifesaver for outdoor sessions!
- Clear Umbrellas: Clear umbrellas are an amazing to get creative for rainy-day shoots! Not only do they keep everyone dry, but their transparent design lets light pass through while still showing off the beautiful surroundings.
- Lanterns: Lanterns are perfect for adding a warm, cozy glow to your photos, especially during cloudy or rainy shoots. They create a magical ambiance, making every shot feel intimate and charming. These ones specifically have a white glow feature or a flickering flame feature!
- Bubble Guns: Adding extra fun to your sessions! Bubble guns are a simple, magical addition to any photoshoot, from kids to adult families. They bring out genuine smiles, create playful moments, and add a whimsical touch to your images. I’ve used them not just with kids but even with adult families, and they loved every second of it, cherishing the fun memories it created!
- Comfortable Shoes: Whether you’re on your feet all day or running between locations, your shoes can make or break the shoot. I love Skechers’ black tennis shoes for long days, or if I need something a bit dressier, I opt for black ballet flats with sneaker soles.
- Compression Socks/Legwear: If you’re standing for long hours, compression socks can make a huge difference in comfort and reduce foot swelling, particularly during extended weddings.
- Compression Gloves: For long shooting and editing sessions, compression gloves are a must-have. They help reduce stiffness and improve circulation, keeping your hands comfortable even during hours of work. They’re perfect for reducing the strain that comes from extended editing marathons!
Post-Shoot: Still must-haves for your photography gear!!
- Toe Separators: I swear by these! 😂 After a long day on your feet at a wedding or event, these gel toe separators help stretch and realign your toes. They “hurt so good” but make a massive difference in reducing foot soreness. Slip them on for an hour, and you’ll feel the relief the next day, if not right away!
- Vertical Mouse: I LOVE this!! Editing can take a toll on your wrist and hands. A vertical ergonomic mouse is a game changer, reducing hand cramps and supporting natural wrist alignment during those long hours of editing.
With the right tools in your kit, you’re not just simplifying your work—you’re setting yourself up for success. These essentials can make all the difference in your confidence and creativity behind the camera. Stay inspired, stay prepared, and happy shooting!
